Aïn Madhi was the Saharan oasis where the medieval Islamic scholar Ahmad al-Tijani was born.
Aïn Madhi is an oasis settlement in southern Algeria and the birthplace of Ahmad al-Tijani, who founded the Tijaniyya Sufi order in the late eighteenth century. Although his life belongs to the early modern period rather than the medieval era, his influence spread widely through North and West Africa.
The Tijaniyya became one of the major Sufi orders in the western Islamic world. Its networks connected scholars, students, merchants, and communities across the Sahara, linking Algeria and Morocco with places such as Mauritania, Senegal, and Nigeria. Aïn Madhi therefore has importance beyond its local oasis setting.
The settlement’s name is also rendered Ain Madhi or Aïn Madi in English-language sources. It should not be confused with Siwa Oasis in Egypt, which is famous for the ancient Oracle of Amun and lies in a different part of the Sahara.
