Which Saharan mountain range contains the volcano Mount Tahat, Algeria’s highest peak?
Answer
Ahaggar Mountains
Answer
Ahaggar Mountains
The Ahaggar Mountains contain Mount Tahat, the highest peak in Algeria.
Also called the Hoggar Mountains, the Ahaggar range rises in the central Sahara, south of the city of Tamanrasset. Mount Tahat reaches approximately 2,908 metres above sea level. The range is known for rugged volcanic landscapes, high plateaus and dramatic rock formations.
The Ahaggar is culturally associated with the Tuareg, a Berber-speaking people whose communities have long travelled across parts of the central Sahara. Tamanrasset became an important regional centre and is often used as a gateway to the mountains.
The Ahaggar is sometimes confused with the Tibesti Mountains, which lie farther east mainly in Chad and Libya and include Emi Koussi, the Sahara’s highest summit. The Atlas Mountains are farther north and form a major mountain system on the Sahara’s northern margin, but they do not contain Mount Tahat.
