Which Saharan fox has the largest ears relative to its body?

The story behind the answer

The fennec fox has the largest ears relative to its body among foxes. This small Saharan fox is scientifically known as Vulpes zerda and is native to sandy deserts of North Africa.

Its ears can reach about 15 centimetres long. They help the animal detect prey beneath the sand and release body heat. The fennec also has furry feet that protect its pads from hot ground and improve movement across loose sand.

Fennecs are mostly nocturnal, avoiding the most intense daytime heat. They shelter in burrows and eat a varied diet that can include insects, small vertebrates, eggs and plant material. Their bodies conserve water efficiently, an important adaptation in an arid environment.

The fennec is sometimes confused with other small desert foxes, but its very large ears, pale coat and tiny size are especially characteristic. It is smaller than the larger Rüppell’s fox, another species found in desert regions.
