Which Sahara region in southern Algeria is nicknamed the Land of Terror?

The story behind the answer

The Sahara region in southern Algeria nicknamed the Land of Terror is Tanezrouft.

Tanezrouft is a vast, exceptionally barren natural region west of the Hoggar Mountains, extending toward northern Mali. Its reputation comes from an almost complete lack of water, vegetation and permanent settlement. The terrain is remarkably flat and featureless, making navigation and survival difficult even though the region is crossed by historic trans-Saharan routes.

The name is associated with the Tuareg language and is commonly explained as meaning “land of thirst” or a similarly waterless place. Modern descriptions emphasize its extreme aridity: annual rainfall can be below 20 millimeters, while summer temperatures may reach about 52°C.

Tanezrouft should not be confused with the Hoggar, which is a mountainous region to its east, or with the Fezzan and Tibesti, which lie in other parts of the Sahara. In 1922, its hard gravel plains helped make possible one of the earliest motor-vehicle crossings of the Sahara.
