Which sage gave Rama divine weapons during his youth?

The story behind the answer

Vishvamitra gave Rama divine weapons during the prince’s youth in the Ramayana.

Vishvamitra was once the powerful king Kaushika before transforming through severe austerities into a revered sage. He came to King Dasharatha seeking Rama’s help in protecting his rituals from rakshasas. Although Dasharatha hesitated to send his young son, Vishvamitra became Rama’s teacher and guide.

During their journey, Vishvamitra taught Rama and Lakshmana sacred knowledge and bestowed celestial weapons, including the Devastras. He also taught the brothers the mantras known as Bala and Atibala, traditionally associated with endurance, alertness, and protection. Under his guidance, Rama defeated the demons Tadaka, Maricha, and Subahu.

Readers sometimes confuse Vishvamitra with Agastya, another sage connected with Rama and divine weaponry later in the epic. Vishvamitra’s distinctive role comes earlier: he introduces Rama to advanced martial and spiritual knowledge and leads the brothers toward Mithila, where Rama encounters Sita’s svayamvara.
