Answer
Three-point seat belt
Answer
Three-point seat belt
Volvo introduced the three-point seat belt as standard equipment in 1959.
Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin developed the modern three-point belt, which combines a lap belt with a diagonal shoulder strap. Volvo fitted it as standard in the front seats of the 1959 Volvo PV544 and Amazon models in some markets.
The design restrains the pelvis and upper body together, reducing the chance that an occupant will strike the interior or be thrown from the vehicle. It was a major improvement over earlier two-point lap belts, which did not provide the same upper-body protection.
Volvo made Bohlin’s patent available to other manufacturers without charging royalties. This unusual decision helped the design spread throughout the automobile industry. The three-point belt remains one of the most important safety features in vehicle history.
