Leon Trotsky lived in Mexico with help from Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
The exiled Russian revolutionary arrived in Mexico in 1937 after receiving permission to settle there. Kahlo and Rivera hosted Trotsky and his wife, Natalia Sedova, at Casa Azul in Coyoacán for a period.
Trotsky and Kahlo had a brief romantic relationship, a detail frequently mentioned in biographies of the artist. Their association ended, and Trotsky later moved to another residence in Mexico City. He was assassinated there in 1940.
The political connection is sometimes overstated as a long-term partnership. Trotsky was a guest and political ally of Rivera’s, while his personal relationship with Kahlo was short-lived. Kahlo also created a portrait dedicated to him in 1937.
