Which Russian literary journal published Crime and Punishment in serial form?
Answer
The Russian Messenger
Answer
The Russian Messenger
Crime and Punishment was published in serial form by The Russian Messenger.
Dostoevsky’s novel appeared in the journal during 1866. The publication was one of the most important literary venues in nineteenth-century Russia, and serialization allowed readers to encounter the psychological crime story in installments. The novel was later published as a complete book.
Its protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, is a former student in Saint Petersburg who commits a murder after developing a theory that extraordinary individuals may stand above ordinary moral law. The novel follows the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual consequences of that act rather than treating the crime as a simple mystery.
The Russian Messenger is also associated with the serial publication of The Idiot and parts of The Brothers Karamazov. It should not be confused with Vremya or Epoch, journals connected to Dostoevsky and his brother Mikhail. The periodical’s Russian name is Russky Vestnik.
