Which Russian grand duke became a lover of Coco Chanel in the early 1920s?

The story behind the answer

Dmitri Pavlovich became a lover of Coco Chanel in the early 1920s.

Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia was a grandson of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and a cousin of Tsar Nicholas II. After leaving Russia following the revolution, he spent time in Western Europe and met Chanel. Their relationship influenced Chanel’s social and creative world during a period when Russian émigrés were prominent in Parisian cultural life.

Dmitri introduced Chanel to Russian artistic and aristocratic circles. Through this connection, she encountered Russian visual and decorative influences that appeared in aspects of her work and surroundings. Chanel also later employed the Russian émigré perfumer Ernest Beaux, who created Chanel No. 5.

Dmitri is sometimes confused with other Russian aristocrats associated with Chanel, particularly Sergei Diaghilev or Grand Duke Dmitri’s cousin Felix Yusupov. Those men were connected to the wider Russian émigré milieu, but Dmitri Pavlovich was Chanel’s romantic partner.
