Which Russian composer wrote 'The Rite of Spring'?
Answer
Igor Stravinsky
Answer
Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky wrote The Rite of Spring.
Stravinsky composed the work for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and it premiered in Paris on 29 May 1913. Its French title is Le Sacre du printemps, with the subtitle Pictures of Pagan Russia in Two Parts. The ballet depicts imagined ancient rituals, including the selection and sacrifice of a young girl to welcome spring.
The premiere became famous for its startling combination of Stravinsky's pounding rhythms, harsh dissonances, unusual accents, and Vaslav Nijinsky's angular choreography. Reports often call the audience reaction a “riot,” although historians note that the scale of the disturbance has been exaggerated and that the work was performed several times afterward.
The other names in the options were important Russian composers, but none wrote this ballet. Stravinsky also composed The Firebird and Petrushka, the two major Ballets Russes works that preceded it.
