Which Russian author wrote 'The Gulag Archipelago'?
Answer
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Answer
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote The Gulag Archipelago. The three-volume nonfiction work examines the Soviet forced-labor camp system, commonly known as the Gulag, through history, testimony, legal records, and the author's own imprisonment.
Solzhenitsyn drafted the book between 1958 and 1968, drawing on interviews and statements from hundreds of former prisoners as well as his personal experience. He had been arrested in 1945 for criticizing Joseph Stalin in private correspondence and spent years in camps and internal exile.
The work was first published in Paris by YMCA-Press in 1973, after a manuscript copy was smuggled out of the Soviet Union. It could not be openly published in the USSR until 1989. A common mix-up is confusing its author with other major Russian writers such as Vladimir Nabokov or Boris Pasternak; neither wrote this account of Soviet repression.
