Which Russian author wrote 'A Hero of Our Time'?

Mikhail Lermontov wrote A Hero of Our Time, the landmark Russian novel first published in 1840. It follows Pechorin, a brilliant but restless officer whose manipulation, boredom, and emotional detachment expose the tensions of his generation.

The book was written during Lermontov’s military service and exile in the Caucasus, and its mountain landscapes, military outposts, and encounters with local peoples strongly shape the narrative. Rather than presenting one straightforward plot, Lermontov arranged five connected stories with shifting narrators and a deliberately non-chronological order.

Pechorin is often described as a “superfluous man,” a recurring Russian literary type: an educated, privileged individual unable to find a meaningful role in society. The title is therefore partly ironic. Pechorin is not a conventional hero, but a portrait of the flaws and frustrations Lermontov saw in his era.

Common mix-ups include Alexander Pushkin, another towering Russian writer who influenced Lermontov, and Nikolai Gogol, whose satire belongs to a different literary tradition. Lermontov also wrote poetry and became known as the “poet of the Caucasus.”
