Which Romantic painter is famous for the painting 'The Nightmare'?
Answer
Henry Fuseli
Answer
Henry Fuseli
Henry Fuseli is the Romantic painter famous for The Nightmare.
Fuseli, whose full name was Johann Heinrich Füssli, was a Swiss-born artist who spent much of his career in Britain. The Nightmare, painted in 1781, shows a sleeping woman sprawled across a bed while a grotesque incubus crouches on her chest. A horse’s head appears behind a curtain, creating a visual pun on the old idea of a “night-mare”—a supernatural creature believed to oppress sleepers.
The painting caused a sensation when Fuseli exhibited it in London in 1782. Its combination of eroticism, horror, theatrical lighting, and dream imagery made it unusually provocative for its time. It became Fuseli’s first major commercial success and helped establish his reputation for psychologically intense subjects.
The Nightmare is sometimes mistaken for a work by William Blake because both artists explored visions, demons, and the supernatural. Unlike Goya’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, however, Fuseli’s famous image is an oil painting on canvas, not a print.
