Spes is the Roman goddess corresponding most closely to the Greek personification Elpis.
Elpis represents hope in Greek mythology, while Spes fulfills a comparable role in Roman religion. Spes was associated with hope, expectation, and the possibility of favorable outcomes. Her name survives in Latin expressions and in the names of Roman monuments and religious dedications.
The comparison does not mean that Roman and Greek religions were identical. Roman writers and worshippers often identified their deities with Greek counterparts, but each tradition retained its own institutions, festivals, imagery, and historical development.
Spes is also distinct from Fortuna, who represents fortune or chance, and Victoria, who represents victory. Those figures can appear in similar discussions of good outcomes, but neither is the direct Roman counterpart of the Greek concept embodied by Elpis.
