Which Roman god ruled the underworld?

The story behind the answer

Which Roman god ruled the underworld? Pluto was the Roman god who ruled the underworld.

Pluto was the Roman counterpart of the Greek Hades and presided over the realm of the dead. He was also associated with the wealth hidden beneath the earth, including metals and fertile soil. His name is connected with the Greek idea of wealth, which gave him a less frightening aspect than the name Hades alone might suggest.

In the myth of Proserpina, Pluto abducts the daughter of Ceres and takes her to the underworld. Her mother’s grief causes the earth to become barren. The eventual agreement that Proserpina spends part of each year below ground was used to explain the cycle of seasons.

Pluto is sometimes confused with Dis Pater or Orcus, older Roman underworld figures who were later merged or associated with him. In straightforward Roman mythology quizzes, however, Pluto is the standard answer for the ruler of the underworld. The dwarf planet Pluto was named after this deity in 1930.
