A Roman Catholic Mass may be included in a traditional quinceañera celebration.
In families that observe the Catholic form of the tradition, the day may begin with a special Mass, often called a quinceañera Mass. The service gives the milestone a religious setting and may include prayers, blessings, readings, music, and participation by the celebrant’s family and attendants.
The reception usually follows the service and can include food, speeches, music, and formal dances. The Mass is not required for every quinceañera, however. The tradition is practiced by families with different religious beliefs, and many modern celebrations are secular or combine religious and cultural elements.
Mass should not be confused with baptism, which welcomes a person into the Christian community, or confirmation, which is a separate Catholic sacrament. A quinceañera Mass is generally a blessing or thanksgiving connected with the birthday milestone, not a sacrament that changes the celebrant’s legal or religious status.
