The Roman author Hyginus helped establish Pandora as the first woman in a surviving Latin mythographic tradition. His Fabulae identifies Pandora as the first woman created and connects her with the opening of the container.
Hyginus was a Roman writer associated with mythological summaries, although the exact identity and date of the author of the Fabulae remain debated. His account adapts Greek material for Latin readers and preserves details that differ from Hesiod’s presentation.
Pandora is not described with exactly the same emphasis in every ancient source. Hesiod focuses on her creation, gifts, marriage, and the release of troubles, while later Latin and European traditions increasingly describe her as the first woman. This later formulation strongly influenced modern summaries of the myth.
