Which river is Lake Geneva's main outflow?

The story behind the answer

Which river is Lake Geneva’s main outflow? The Rhône is Lake Geneva’s main outflow.

The Rhône enters Lake Geneva from the east and leaves it at the western end near the city of Geneva. The lake is shared by Switzerland and France, and the river remains the principal watercourse connecting the Alpine lake to the Mediterranean Sea through southeastern France.

Lake Geneva is one of Western Europe’s largest lakes and the largest lake along the Rhône. Water passing through Geneva continues westward through France, flowing past cities including Lyon and Avignon before reaching the Mediterranean near the Rhône delta. The lake moderates the river’s flow, even though seasonal and climatic conditions still affect water levels.

The Saône is a major Rhône tributary, not Lake Geneva’s outflow. The Aare flows through Switzerland into the Rhine, while the Rhine itself is a separate major European river system. “Rhone” is the same answer as Rhône; the accent is simply the standard French spelling.
