Which river flows through the most capital cities?

The river that flows through the most national capital cities is the Danube. It passes through four capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade—more than any other river.

The Danube begins at Donaueschingen in Germany, where the Brigach and Breg meet, and runs southeast for about 2,850 kilometers before reaching the Black Sea through its delta. Along the way, it passes through or borders 10 countries, giving it an unusually international character.

Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade grew along the Danube because the river supported trade, transport, defense, fishing, and access to fertile land.
