Which river flows through ten European countries?

The story behind the answer

The Danube is the river that flows through or borders ten European countries. It travels southeast from Germany to the Black Sea, making it one of the world’s most international rivers.

The Danube begins at Donaueschingen in Germany’s Black Forest, where the Brigach and Breg meet. It runs about 1,770 miles through or along Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine. The river passes four national capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade.

The wording “flows through ten countries” is often simplified. In several places, the Danube forms an international border rather than passing through a country’s interior, but it still connects ten countries by territory or boundary. Its delta spreads across Romania and Ukraine before the river reaches the Black Sea.
