Which river flows through Seoul, South Korea?

The Han River flows through Seoul, South Korea. It runs across the capital’s center and is crossed by numerous bridges, making it one of the defining geographic features of modern Seoul.

The river forms where the Namhan, or South Han River, meets the Bukhan, or North Han River, near Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi Province. From there it flows westward through Seoul before joining the Imjin River and reaching the Yellow Sea near the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

Within Seoul, the Han is exceptionally broad—more than 1 kilometer wide in places. Its river islands and waterfront parks, including Yeouido and Hangang parks, are prominent parts of the city’s landscape and recreation culture.

The name also appears in the phrase “Miracle on the Han River,” which refers to South Korea’s rapid postwar economic development. The Imjin River is a tributary and nearby river, not the main river running through Seoul.
