Which Rio de Janeiro mountain is reached by cable car at Guanabara Bay? The answer is Sugarloaf Mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain, or Pão de Açúcar, rises 396 metres above a peninsula at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. Its steep granite form appears to rise directly from the water, creating the dramatic harbor view for which the city is famous.
The mountain is part of a group of steep-sided granite outcrops known as bornhardts. Its name comes from its resemblance to a traditional sugarloaf: a concentrated, cone-shaped block of refined sugar. The summit is reached by a two-stage cable-car journey, first stopping at the lower Morro da Urca and then continuing to Sugarloaf.
The original cable-car line opened in 1912 and has been rebuilt several times. Corcovado is another famous Rio landmark, but it is the mountain associated with Christ the Redeemer rather than this cable-car route. Pedra da Gávea and Tijuca Peak are also nearby landmarks, but neither is the answer to this question.
