Which rider won the Tour de France five consecutive times?
Answer
Miguel Indurain
Answer
Miguel Indurain
Miguel Indurain won the Tour de France five consecutive times, from 1991 through 1995. He was the first rider to achieve five straight overall victories and remains the only cyclist to win five Tours consecutively.
The Spanish rider’s dominance came from exceptional time-trialling, strong climbing, and disciplined tactics. He could build substantial advantages against the clock and then defend them in the mountains. His large frame—about 1.86 metres tall—was unusual for a top Grand Tour contender, but his power and endurance made him especially effective in long time trials.
Indurain shares the record for five total Tour victories with Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, and Bernard Hinault. The distinction is that only Indurain won all five in successive editions. He also won the Giro d’Italia in 1992 and 1993, becoming the first rider to complete the Giro-Tour double in two consecutive years. He retired after the 1996 season.
