Which rider is known as 'The Doctor'?

The story behind the answer

The rider known as “The Doctor” is Valentino Rossi.

Rossi’s nickname became one of the defining labels of modern motorcycle racing. The Italian dominated the premier class across the late 1990s, 2000s and early 2010s, winning seven premier-class championships and nine Grand Prix world titles across all categories. His theatrical personality, longevity and instantly recognisable number 46 helped make the nickname famous far beyond MotoGP.

The origin is often linked to Rossi’s family background: his father, Graziano Rossi, was a professional motorcycle racer, and “doctor” is also a respectful Italian expression for someone highly skilled. Rossi has sometimes offered playful alternative explanations, including references to a doctor-like surname tradition in his region, so the precise origin is not entirely settled.

“The Doctor” should not be confused with “Doctor” being part of his official name. It is a racing nickname, much like “The Kentucky Kid” for Nicky Hayden or “The Texas Tornado” for Colin Edwards.
