Which rider holds the record for the most green jersey wins?

The story behind the answer

Peter Sagan holds the record for the most Tour de France green jersey wins, with seven.

Sagan won the points classification in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. The green jersey rewards consistency in high placings and intermediate sprints, so it is associated with strong sprinters but is not limited to pure speed specialists. Sagan’s ability to sprint, climb short hills and collect points across many stages made him exceptionally successful.

His seven victories surpassed Erik Zabel’s previous record of six, earned consecutively from 1996 through 2001. Sean Kelly won four, while Mario Cipollini and Mark Cavendish each achieved fewer green-jersey victories. Sagan’s 2017 Tour ended in disqualification, interrupting what might otherwise have been an eight-year winning run.

The green jersey is awarded to the points-classification leader, not necessarily the rider with the most stage wins. A rider can win several stages yet lose the classification to someone who finishes consistently near the front and scores heavily at intermediate sprints.
