Which rhinoceros species is the smallest and lives in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo?

The story behind the answer

The Sumatran rhinoceros is the smallest living rhinoceros species and inhabits tropical forests of Sumatra and Borneo.

It is also the only living Asian rhinoceros with two horns. Its reddish-brown body is covered by folds of skin and a coat of coarse hair, giving it a more primitive appearance than the mostly hairless Indian and Javan rhinoceroses.

The species browses on leaves, twigs, fruit, and other forest vegetation. It prefers dense lowland and montane forest but has lost much of its historical range through habitat conversion and hunting.

The Sumatran rhinoceros is critically endangered, with wild populations extremely small and fragmented. It is distinct from the Javan rhinoceros, which has one horn and is found mainly in Java’s Ujung Kulon National Park.
