Which rhinoceros species has two horns and a square lip?
Answer
White rhinoceros
Answer
White rhinoceros
The rhinoceros species with two horns and a square lip is the white rhinoceros.
The white rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum, is an African rhino whose broad, straight-edged mouth is adapted for grazing grass. Its two horns are made of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and fingernails; the front horn is usually much larger than the rear one.
The square lip is the easiest way to distinguish a white rhinoceros from a black rhinoceros. Despite their names, the two species are not reliably separated by colour. Black rhinoceroses have a pointed, prehensile upper lip suited to browsing leaves and twigs.
The white rhinoceros has two recognized subspecies: the southern white rhinoceros and the critically endangered northern white rhinoceros. The word “white” is commonly linked to a historical mistranslation of a word meaning “wide,” referring to the animal’s broad mouth, rather than to its skin colour.
