Which revolutionary journalist was executed alongside Danton on April 5, 1794?

The story behind the answer

The revolutionary journalist executed alongside Georges Danton on 5 April 1794 was Camille Desmoulins.

Camille Desmoulins was a journalist, lawyer, and revolutionary politician who became famous for helping spark popular action in Paris in July 1789. He was a close friend and former schoolmate of Maximilien Robespierre, and later became a political ally of Georges Danton.

Desmoulins served as a deputy in the National Convention and supported the Republic, but he eventually criticized the violence of the Terror. In his journal Le Vieux Cordelier, published from December 1793, he called for moderation, clemency, and the release of prisoners. These arguments brought him into conflict with Robespierre and other revolutionary leaders.

Desmoulins was arrested with Danton and their allies, tried before the Revolutionary Tribunal, and guillotined on 5 April 1794. The execution followed the March purge of Hébertists, including Jacques Hébert. Desmoulins’s wife, Lucile, was executed eight days later, on 13 April, after being accused of conspiring to help him.
