Walmart popularized “Everyday Low Prices” as a core retail pricing strategy.
The phrase describes Walmart’s policy of keeping regular prices low rather than relying mainly on frequent sales and temporary promotions. The approach became one of the central elements of Walmart’s operating model and advertising, alongside large-scale purchasing, efficient logistics and high sales volume.
Sam Walton founded Walmart in 1962, and the company expanded by locating many stores outside major urban centers. Its scale enabled Walmart to negotiate with suppliers and spread distribution costs across a large network. The retailer’s pricing message was designed to make low prices appear dependable and routine.
Other retailers also use everyday-low-price strategies, so the phrase itself is not exclusive to Walmart. However, Walmart is the retailer most strongly associated with the expression in international business and retail histories. “Everyday Low Prices” should not be confused with “rollback,” which refers to particular price reductions promoted by Walmart.
