Which retailer owns the British catalogue and stores business Argos?

The story behind the answer

Sainsbury’s owns the British catalogue and stores business Argos.

Sainsbury’s acquired Argos’s parent company, Home Retail Group, in 2016. The deal brought Argos together with Sainsbury’s supermarket network and created opportunities for collection points, delivery services and shared retail locations.

Argos began in 1972, founded by Richard Tompkins. Its original catalogue-based model allowed customers to choose products from printed catalogues and collect them from stores, rather than browsing conventional shelves. The business later expanded through digital ordering and home delivery.

Argos is sometimes described as a separate competitor to Sainsbury’s because its branding remains distinct. Corporate ownership, however, is different from customer-facing brand identity: Argos continues to operate under its own name while belonging to J Sainsbury plc.
