Which reptile is found naturally only in the Galápagos Islands and feeds in the sea?

The story behind the answer

The marine iguana is the reptile found naturally only in the Galápagos Islands that feeds in the sea.

Marine iguanas forage underwater for algae, using flattened tails to swim and claws to cling to rocks in strong surge. They can remain submerged for around 10 minutes or more, although dive duration depends on conditions, activity, and water temperature.

After feeding, they bask on volcanic rocks to restore body heat. Special glands near the nose remove excess salt from the bloodstream, and the animals often sneeze or forcefully expel concentrated salt solution. Their dark coloration also helps them absorb solar heat.

There are several recognized island forms, and size and color vary among populations. Marine iguanas are vulnerable to introduced predators, food shortages, disease, and changes in ocean conditions linked to El Niño events.
