Which Renaissance painter is known for the 'Flagellation of Christ' and his use of mathematical perspective?
Answer
Piero della Francesca
Answer
Piero della Francesca
Piero della Francesca is the Renaissance painter known for The Flagellation of Christ and his mathematical approach to perspective.
Piero was born in Sansepolcro and worked during the Early Renaissance, producing paintings marked by calm figures, carefully organized geometry, and a strong sense of spatial order. The Flagellation of Christ, generally dated to 1459–1460, places the biblical scene in a receding architectural loggia while three foreground figures stand apart from it.
The work’s striking perspective reflects Piero’s wider interest in mathematics. He wrote De prospectiva pingendi, a treatise on perspective in painting, as well as works on arithmetic and the geometry of regular solids. His studies helped connect artistic practice with the mathematical investigation of space that defined much of Renaissance art.
The Flagellation is often confused with paintings by other Early Renaissance masters because the period shared religious subjects and similar architectural settings. Fra Angelico is associated with devotional frescos, Botticelli with graceful mythological and religious paintings, and Donatello primarily with sculpture.
