Which Rembrandt painting shows a large group of surgeons gathered around Dr. Tulp?

The story behind the answer

The Rembrandt painting showing surgeons gathered around Dr. Tulp is The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.

Rembrandt completed the group portrait in 1632, soon after moving from Leiden to Amsterdam. It shows the physician Nicolaes Tulp demonstrating the muscles of the arm during a public anatomy lesson. The body belonged to the executed criminal Aris Kindt.

Unlike many earlier group portraits, the sitters do not form a rigid row. They look toward the demonstration and toward one another, creating a sense of shared attention. This innovative arrangement helped establish Rembrandt’s reputation in Amsterdam.

The painting was commissioned by the Amsterdam Surgeons’ Guild and became one of the defining works of his early Amsterdam period. It is now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The picture is sometimes confused with Rembrandt’s later Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman, a related but much smaller work that survives only in part.
