Rembrandt painted this work in 1656 for the Amsterdam Surgeons’ Guild. It shows Dr. Jan Deijman conducting an anatomical demonstration, with the brain of a cadaver being examined. The original composition was much larger, but a fire in 1723 damaged the canvas, leaving only a central fragment and a separate head study.

The surviving fragment is in the Amsterdam Museum. Its foreshortened view of the body creates a striking visual connection with the viewer, while the arrangement of observers records the public medical culture of seventeenth-century Amsterdam.

The work is frequently confused with Rembrandt’s earlier The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, completed in 1632. Both paintings show surgeons’ guild lessons, but they portray different doctors and were made twenty-four years apart.
