Which Rembrandt painting depicts Lucretia holding a dagger?

The story behind the answer

Rembrandt’s 1666 painting Lucretia depicts the Roman heroine Lucretia holding a dagger.

According to Roman tradition, Lucretia was assaulted by Sextus Tarquinius, a son of Rome’s king. She reported the crime to her family and allies before taking her own life, an act that helped trigger the revolt leading to the Roman Republic.

Rembrandt painted Lucretia more than once. His 1666 version shows her in a richly worked garment, with the dagger and her grave expression conveying the tragedy of the story. The image is less an action scene than an intense study of psychological and moral suffering.

The painting is sometimes confused with Rembrandt’s other depictions of tragic women from classical or biblical stories. The dagger is the key identifying attribute in this work.
