Which region near Tokyo was targeted by planned Operation Coronet in the Allied invasion of Japan?

The story behind the answer

The Kantō Plain near Tokyo was targeted by planned Operation Coronet in the Allied invasion of Japan.

Operation Coronet was intended to be the second stage of Operation Downfall, following Operation Olympic’s planned invasion of southern Kyūshū. The Kantō Plain, located on Honshū, contains Tokyo and was considered the key objective for a major Allied assault on Japan’s political and administrative center.

Coronet was tentatively scheduled for March 1, 1946. The plan called for large American forces to land on beaches near the Kantō Plain and advance toward Tokyo. It would have followed the establishment of airfields and supply bases in southern Kyūshū.

Japan surrendered before either operation began. Coronet is therefore a planned campaign rather than a battle. It is also distinct from Operation Olympic, which was aimed at Kyūshū rather than the Tokyo region.
