The original Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue games are set in the Kanto region.
Kanto is the first major region introduced in the Pokémon video game series. Players travel through towns, cities, routes, caves, seas, and forests while collecting the original 151 Pokémon and challenging eight Gym Leaders. The journey ends at the Pokémon League on the Indigo Plateau.
Kanto is inspired by Japan’s real Kantō region, but the two are not identical. The Pokémon version rearranges geography and adds fictional locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, and Cinnabar Island. A common mix-up is that the original Japanese games were called Pocket Monsters Red and Green, while many international players first encountered the setting through Pokémon Red and Blue.
The name Kanto itself was not used in the first Japanese games; it became established with the second generation, when players could return to the original region after exploring Johto.
