Alola is the setting of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.
Alola is a tropical island region loosely based on Hawaii. The games send the player across an archipelago of islands while completing the Island Challenge, a regional tradition involving trials and battles.
The setting introduced several new ideas to the main Pokémon formula, including Alolan Forms of older Pokémon, Z-Moves, and Ultra Beasts. Professor Kukui serves as the region’s leading Pokémon researcher, while Team Skull acts as a major opposing group.
Alola is sometimes confused with Kanto because Pokémon Sun and Moon include older Pokémon and references to earlier games. However, their main story, island trials, and regional forms are specifically tied to Alola.
