Which region is the setting for the Pokémon Gold and Silver video games?

The story behind the answer

Johto is the region that serves as the setting for Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Johto was introduced in the second generation of Pokémon games, released in Japan in 1999. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, forests, and the Pokémon League while collecting eight Johto Gym Badges.

The region is located west of Kanto, and the games allow players to visit Kanto after completing the main Johto storyline. This connection made Gold and Silver feel like a continuation of the original adventure rather than an entirely separate world.

Johto’s design draws heavily on traditional Japanese imagery and geography. Notable locations include Ecruteak City, the Ruins of Alph, and the National Park. The games also introduced 100 new Pokémon, a day-and-night cycle, breeding, held items, and Pokémon eggs.
