Which region is most closely associated with the traditional quinceañera custom?

The story behind the answer

Latin America is the region most closely associated with the traditional quinceañera custom.

Quinceañeras are celebrated throughout much of Latin America and in Hispanic communities around the world. The event has especially strong associations with countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and others in the region, although customs are not identical from place to place.

Migration has carried the tradition far beyond Latin America. Large Hispanic communities in the United States hold quinceañeras, and families often combine regional practices with local influences. Music, food, religious observance, clothing, and the order of rituals can therefore vary considerably.

Calling it a Latin American tradition does not mean every Latin American family celebrates it, nor does it imply one fixed format. The custom is shaped by nationality, religion, class, family preference, and generation. Its shared core is recognition of a girl’s fifteenth birthday and transition toward adulthood.
