Which region is featured in Pokémon X and Y?

The story behind the answer

Kalos is the region featured in Pokémon X and Y.

The sixth-generation games take place in Kalos, a Pokémon region inspired primarily by France. Its central landmark is Lumiose City, a large urban area modeled after Paris and organized around Prism Tower. The region also includes forests, coasts, mountains, villages, and routes designed around French geography and culture.

Kalos introduced 72 new Pokémon species, including the legendary Pokémon Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. It also introduced the Fairy type and Mega Evolution, two of the generation's most recognizable gameplay additions. The player travels through Kalos while challenging Gym Leaders and confronting Team Flare.

Kalos is easy to mix up with Unova, the setting of Pokémon Black and White, or Alola, the island region of Pokémon Sun and Moon. The games' names do not directly name their region: X and Y refer to axes and contrasting ideas, while Kalos is revealed through the games' world and story.
