Which region is featured in Pokémon Gold and Silver?

Pokémon Gold and Silver are set in the Johto region.

Johto is the main setting of the second-generation Pokémon games, which were released in Japan in 1999 for the Game Boy Color. The region lies west of Kanto, the setting of the first-generation games.

The games introduced 100 new Pokémon, including Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Lugia, and Ho-Oh. Players begin their journey with Professor Elm and work toward challenging Johto's Gym Leaders and Pokémon League.

Gold and Silver also connect directly to the earlier games. After completing the main story, players can travel to Kanto, where the events of Red and Blue took place. Johto is therefore not a replacement for Kanto, but a neighboring region with its own storyline and locations.
