The Alola region in Pokémon Sun and Moon is based on Hawaii.
Alola is an island region made up of four main islands and one artificial island. Its tropical environment, ocean routes, volcanic landscapes, and island communities reflect characteristics associated with the Hawaiian Islands.
Pokémon Sun and Moon changed the usual Gym-based progression into an island challenge. Players travel between islands, complete trials, and face powerful Totem Pokémon. The setting also introduced regional forms, including Alolan versions of Pokémon first seen in earlier games.
The games were developed by Game Freak for the Nintendo 3DS and released worldwide in November 2016. Their setting was designed to emphasize sunlight, moonlight, distinctive biomes, and relationships between living creatures. Alola also introduced 81 new Pokémon species and the Ultra Beasts.
