Which region in Pokémon games is based mainly on New York City?

The story behind the answer

Unova is the Pokémon region based mainly on New York City.

Unova appears in Pokémon Black and White and their enhanced sequels, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. It was the setting of the franchise’s fifth generation and represented a major geographic change from the earlier regions, which were largely inspired by areas of Japan.

The region includes locations modeled on New York City landmarks and environments. Its central urban area, Castelia City, is particularly associated with Manhattan, while other places reflect surrounding landscapes and the wider New York area.

Unova is sometimes confused with later regions based on other real-world places. Kalos draws heavily from France, Galar from Great Britain, and Paldea from the Iberian Peninsula. Unova’s New York influence was notable because it established a new international direction for the main series’ settings.
