Which recurring SNL game-show parody featured Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek?

The story behind the answer

Celebrity Jeopardy! was the recurring SNL game-show parody featuring Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek. The sketch treated the real quiz show’s celebrity specials as a chaotic comedy format, with contestants misunderstanding clues, selecting absurd categories, and ending with disastrously low scores.

The first SNL Celebrity Jeopardy! sketch aired in December 1996, during Ferrell’s time as a cast member. Ferrell played Trebek as the increasingly exasperated straight man. Darrell Hammond usually appeared as Sean Connery, while Norm Macdonald played Burt Reynolds in several installments. The contestants’ bizarre answers and insults became the central joke rather than the trivia itself.

The sketches ran regularly from 1996 through 2002, then returned for special appearances in 2005, 2009, and the 2015 SNL 40th Anniversary Special. Ferrell reprised Trebek after leaving the cast when he hosted the show, helping make the character one of his most recognizable SNL creations.

This parody is distinct from the real Celebrity Jeopardy!, a charity-oriented version of the quiz show. SNL borrowed that title and premise but turned the format into a character-driven farce.
