Which record label signed Stevie Wonder in 1961?

The story behind the answer

Tamla Records signed Stevie Wonder in 1961. Tamla was a subsidiary of Motown founded by Berry Gordy, and Wonder joined the company as a child performer after Ronnie White of the Miracles helped bring him to Gordy’s attention.

Wonder was only 11 when he signed. His first recordings were released under the name Little Stevie Wonder, and the label marketed his exceptional musicianship alongside his youth. His early success helped establish him as one of Motown’s most distinctive developing artists.

Tamla is sometimes described simply as Motown because it operated within the Motown corporate family. However, Tamla was the specific label named on Wonder’s early releases. His first major hit, “Fingertips,” appeared on the Tamla label in 1963.

As Wonder matured, he gained increasing creative control over his writing, production, and arrangements. That artistic independence became especially visible in his acclaimed 1970s albums, although his career remained closely associated with Motown.
