Lauryn Hill’s 1998 album made her the first female artist to win five Grammy Awards in one night.
The album was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Hill’s only solo studio album. Released on August 25, 1998, it blended hip-hop, R&B, soul, reggae, and doo-wop while addressing love, motherhood, identity, and personal growth.
At the 41st Annual Grammy Awards on February 24, 1999, Hill won five awards: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The album also became the first hip-hop recording to win Album of the Year.
A common mix-up is the year: the album came out in 1998, but the historic Grammy ceremony took place in 1999. Beyoncé later surpassed Hill’s single-night record by winning six Grammys in 2010.
