Answer
The Supremes
Answer
The Supremes
The Supremes recorded the 1964 number-one hit “Where Did Our Love Go.”
Released by Motown on June 17, 1964, the song was written and produced by Holland–Dozier–Holland, the songwriting and production team that helped define the label’s classic sound. It featured the Supremes’ lineup of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson, with Ross handling the lead vocal.
The single became the Supremes’ first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It held the top position for two weeks, from August 16 through August 29, 1964. Its success transformed the group from promising Motown performers into major pop stars, especially after they performed it during Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Caravan of Stars tour.
Listeners sometimes confuse the song with later Supremes hits such as “Baby Love” or “Come See About Me.” Those songs also reached number one, but “Where Did Our Love Go” came first and began a run of five consecutive Supremes chart-toppers.
