Which ray is the largest ray species in the world?

The story behind the answer

The oceanic manta ray is the largest ray species in the world.

Also called the giant oceanic manta ray, it is scientifically known as Mobula birostris. Its broad, wing-like pectoral fins can span more than 7 metres in exceptional individuals, giving it the greatest overall size among rays. It is a cartilaginous fish related to sharks and other rays.

Oceanic manta rays feed mainly on plankton and small organisms by swimming forward with their mouths open. Fleshy cephalic fins beside the mouth help direct water and food into the gill chambers. Unlike stingrays, they do not have a venomous tail spine, although their size still demands caution around boats and divers.

The species travels through tropical and subtropical waters and may visit cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites. It is distinct from the reef manta ray, which is generally smaller and more closely associated with shallow coastal habitats.
