Which Ravens player had an assault trial in June of 2005?

Terrell Suggs was the Ravens player whose assault trial took place in June 2005. The Baltimore linebacker was tried in Arizona over a 2003 altercation near a three-on-three basketball tournament at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Prosecutors alleged that Suggs punched an old friend and restrained another man while a second person struck him with a metal rod. Suggs maintained that he was trying to act as a peacemaker and said he had been hit first with an iron bar. The trial lasted about two weeks.

A Maricopa County jury acquitted Suggs of aggravated assault on June 29, 2005. His younger brother, Donald, was also acquitted of charges connected with the confrontation, while another felony count against Terrell had been dismissed before the verdict.

The case is sometimes confused with Ray Lewis’s much earlier murder trial or with later allegations involving other Ravens players. Suggs was a first-round pick in 2003 and became one of Baltimore’s best-known defensive players.
